SERVICES AT SLC

Holiday Season

December begins our celebration of light. Light has long been a radiant symbol of what is good about humanity. Our Hindu friends celebrate Diwali, which is their festival of lights. Jews around the world light up the menorah, a reminder to bring light to times of repression and darkness. Muslims throughout the world pray and fast from first light to sunset every day during the holy month of Ramadan. Many African Americans now kindle the Kwanzaa candles to celebrate their African heritage and rich family values. Christians light up their world as they celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, “The Great Light,” who came to remind all of us that we, too, are the light of the world.

Whether it is the colorful lights on the Christmas tree, the Kwanzaa candles, the brilliant sunrise and sunset, or the flickering of lights on the menorah, it’s all about honoring God by letting the light shine through us – honoring the quality of our hearts – our rich diversity – our divinity – our unity.

Join us as we begin our annual Christmas holiday activities and experience the sacredness of this special time of the year. Our holiday season typically includes:

Thanksgiving Eve Communion Service: a beautiful and contemplative service.

Taize Prayer Service: Taize (pronounced tuh-ZAY) is an ecumenical community in France of Protestant, Roman Catholic, and Orthodox brothers who have developed a unique and beautiful form of Christian chanting. Join us for this spiritually enriching chanting service.

Holiday Musical: A fun-filled production that helps us all look at the Christmas story with new eyes. The musical is full of music, laughter, and many of our talented children and teens.

Our Candlelight Services bring the beautiful Christmas story to life and makes it so relevant to your life. The choir will fill the beautiful sanctuary with sacred music and the evening ends with the singing of “Silent Night, Holy Night as we watch the flickering candle light spread throughout the sanctuary.” Let the flickering of candlelight and the message of the Christmas miracle fill your heart with the true spirit of this Holy Season. It will be an evening of miracles and wonders.

New Years’ Eve Novena and Burning Bowl: Celebrate bringing in the energy of the New Year with your spiritual family by praying, singing, and forgiving at this special service held at 11:00 p.m. on New Years’ Eve.

Blessing of the World’s Religions: The last Sunday of each year is dedicated to peace and understanding among the religions of the world. During these services, we will light candles representing a major religion and pray their prayers for peace. This is one of our most moving and meaningful services of the year.
