Book:  The House of Broken Angels by Luis Alberto Urrea

Greetings All,

We are personally inviting you to join the Raising Our Social Consciousness (ROSC) Book Club which we facilitate for Spiritual Life Center. The ROSC Book Club seeks to explore the experiences of different populations in the United States.

This round of our book club we are reading The House of Broken Angels by Luis Alberto Urrea. It is a work of fiction focusing on the Mexican-American immigrant experience. That being said, this book has some pages that are raw and sexually explicit.  It is similar in many respects to “My Grandmother’s Hands” which explored intergenerational trauma--except that it is a novel.  Other issues include death and dying, male/female relationships, immigration, racism, poverty, generational change, communication problems, and family relationships.  We have found it very thought provoking and spiritually moving.

Luis Alberto Urrea has received numerous honors, including being a Pulitzer Prize finalistGuggenheim FellowLannan Literary Award winner, and recipient of an American Academy of Arts & Letters Award, an Edgar AwardChristopher Award, and the Chicago Literary Hall of Fame's Fuller Award for lifetime achievement, recognized for his impactful work in fiction, non-fiction (like The Devil's Highway), and poetry.

The group is facilitated in a way to ensure emotional safety for all participants while learning about new and sometimes challenging material.

There is no cost to join the ROSC Book Club, but a suggested Love Offering (between $5 to $50) is recommended to support SLC programs such as our ROSC Book Club. Donations made to Spiritual Life Center are tax deductible. A Love Offering can be made when you register here or at a later time after the Book Club begins.

We look forward to meeting new folks and reuniting with returning folks.

The first session will consist of introductions and suggestions for reading the book. The reading assignment for  group 1 is  the Beginning to page 68.  If you have NOT read that much, come anyway because the discussion will still be of interest and you can catch up.

Blessings to You & Yours,

Linda & Be
