Currently, Islam is the second largest religion in the world. Many estimates predict that it will overtake Christianity and become the largest religion in the 2070s. “We need to understand and know more about this vibrant faith, and there is so much that we can learn from it,” Rev. Rick Belous says.

More about our guests:

Yadi Kavakebi is an Iranian born musician and architect living in Sacramento. He skillfully performs Avaz, a highly improvisatory vocal style of Persian classical music featuring complex melodic passages. Yadi also plays the Ney, a traditional reed flute central to Middle Eastern music, as well as the Daf, an ancient Persian drum consisting of a tightly stretched animal skin on a circular wooden frame with dozens of metal rings lining the inside of the frame.

Catherine Mandella is a phenomenal multi-instrumentalist with a deep passion for keeping world music traditions alive. She is the creator of the music collective Sambandha Music of the World.  (the word Sambandha is Sanskrit for the interconnectedness of all things). Catherine's sound will transport you to lands near and far, playing original tunes as well as tunes over 2000 years old. She specializes in music spanning the globe - Latin, Middle Eastern, Klezmer, African, European and Celtic, etc. She regularly

joins forces with established dancers, such as Sawako Ama, Kanoelani Polynesian, Manasa, and the Mckeaver School of Irish Dance.

How these colors were chosen:

Green is deeply tied to nature and is the most widely recognized color in Islamic tradition. It symbolizes the lush gardens of Jannah (paradise) and is referenced in the Quran as the color of the garments worn by the inhabitants of heaven, signifying faith and immortality.

Gold in Islam represents both a divine symbol of ultimate heavenly reward and a test of worldly temptation. It is viewed as a tangible store of stable wealth and is utilized for adornment, though strict ethical boundaries regulate its display and usage.
